Harder Back Action Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the 1880s in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. John Harder was a long successful business man and gunmaker from Clearfield, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Lock Haven Seminary, he became the proprietor of Harder’s Gun Works established in 1878 at the age of 20. Mr. Harder was a thirty-second degree Mason and belonged also to other fraternalanizations. From early manhood he was politically identified with the Republican Party, and whether serving his friends or holding office himself, was always loyal to its principles. This rifle features a distinctly shaped stock with a pistol grip, dramatically curved trigger guard, double set triggers, and a patch box. The bore is .45 caliber. The cheek rest is inset with a stag. The top of the octagonal barrel is marked “J.E. HARDER/CLEARFIELD, PA”. The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The stock has a small repair from the end of the barrel tang to the tail of the back-action lock. The bore is coated with a fine dust with sharp rifling showing through. The bore should clean up very nicely if one was of a mind to do so. The action is excellent, strong and crisp, especially with that double set trigger. Here is a great percussion rifle that would have been great for putting venison on the table or protecting the homestead! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 36-3/4 inches. Caliber: .45 percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
