Description:

SCOTTISH Antique LANDELL Back Action Shotgun c1860

Single Barrel Percussion Shotgun from Glasgow

Here we present a William Landell Back Action percussion shotgun. William Landell was a manufacturer from Glasgow, Scotland in the mid to late 19th Century. Records show that Landell was an ironmonger, cutler, instrument maker and a tool and gun maker. Originally, he was in partnership with a William Neilson, who died in 1858. At that time, Landell became sole proprieter of the business. He died in 1891.

A “Back Action” shotgun uses a sidelock action where the mainspring is mounted rearward towards the butt. The back action is often used in double rifles and occasionally in single barrel shotguns where the need for strength requires as little steel as possible be removed from the bar of the action.

This single barrel shotgun would have been used for hunting and pest control in the mid-19th Century. The back-action lock is marked “W LANDELL”. The top of the half-octagon, half-round barrel is marked “GLASGOW”. The barrel tang, trigger guard, lock, and butt plate are engraved.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age with some areas of heavier oxidation. The markings are clear and legible. The stock shows use in the field and has seen minor repair along the forearm. The bore is smooth and dark. There is a little separation of the bottom rib which hold the ramrod. The action on this shotgun is strong.
