Description:

JAPANESE KANJI Marked Antique Percussion MUSKET

European Origin, Made Circa the 1840s

Here we present an antique European Percussion Musket, made circa the mid-19th Century. This military musket features about a 40-inch, .67 caliber smoothbore barrel. The only markings to be found on the gun are the string of what appears to be Japanese Kanji on the right side of the butt stock. This is from the period following the Perry Expedition that opened up reclusive Japan to international trade and modernization.
The overall condition is good. The barrel has a uniform dark patina while many of the other hardware has a thin blue finish that was applied later. The markings in the stock are clear. The stock is smooth and solid with typical handling marks. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is functional though the mainspring is a bit weak and there is a little movement in the hammer. Here is an interesting musket!
