Smith & Wesson Archive Letter to Belknap Hardware
Here we present a Smith & Wesson 5th Model .38 Safety Hammerless Revolver, made circa 1913 in Springfield, Massachusetts, according to the factory letter. This revolver was shipped from the factory on August 1, 1913 and delivered to Belknap Hardware Co., Louisville, KY. Belknap was a Louisville giant, making and selling various hardware supplies and competing with the likes of Sears, Roebuck, and Co. and Montgomery Ward.
These S&W Safety Hammerless Revolvers were also known as the “New Departure” or the “Lemon Squeezer”, the latter due to the safety bar in the backstrap. This little revolver holds 5 shots of .38 Smith & Wesson. It was designed to meet the defensive needs of citizens and law enforcement in the late 19th Century. This is a top break design with an automatic ejector, hammerless design and grip safety. These features made it great for pocket carry.
The left side of the barrel is marked “38 S&W CTG”. The top of the barrel is marked “SMITH&WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS U.S.A.”
The overall condition is near excellent. The original blue finish is 95% intact. The case colors are still quite vibrant on the trigger. The markings are clear and legible. The trademarked hard rubber grips are in good condition with a chip out of the bottom of the right panel. The bore is sharp and shiny. The action is excellent. Here is a very collectable, high-quality Smith & Wesson!
