ENGRAVED Antique ALLEN & THURBER Pepperbox Revolver
First American Double Action Revolving Pistol
Here we present an antique Engraved Allen & Thurber Bar Hammer Pepperbox Percussion Revolver, made circa 1850 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Ethan Allen was already a prolific inventor in the 1830s when he came up with this design. His business was very successful. These revolvers enjoyed even greater popularity than Sam Colt’s first designs. The history that these pistols enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. These guns are true relics of American history.
This revolver features a 4-3/8-inch barrel marked “ALLEN & THURBER” and “Worcester” along with “PATENTED 1837”. Very classy engraving has been done on the frame and shield from the manufactory.
The overall condition is near fine. Traces of the original blue finish remain on the barrel and the balance has a nice patina. The markings are clear and legible as well as the engravings. The numbers match including the walnut grips. The grips are in very good condition. The bores are clean and smooth. The action on this pistol is excellent. Here is a very classy and well-designed early American revolver by Ethan Allen!
