ANTIQUE SHARPS NewModel 1863 Carbine in 50-70 GOVT
Classic Old West Saddle Ring Carbine
Here we present an antique Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine, made circa 1863, then converted to 50-70 Govt circa 1867 for use in the West by the federal government. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War, and afterward, the U.S. contracted with Sharps to convert them at the factory to shoot metallic cartridges. Just over 31,000 firearms were converted in this manner, in several different variants. They went on to experience some of the most exciting times in American history during the Indian Wars, the settling of the West, and the connecting of the coasts with the railroad.
This specimen is an example of one of the conversions which utilized a sleeved, three groove barrel, chambered for 50-70 GOVT.
Overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a smooth, even finish. Case colors are still visible in many areas. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is smooth and solid. The bore is sharp and bright. The action is excellent. Here is a great example of the iconic Sharps Carbine!
