RARE US NAVY Springfield 1870 Rolling Block Rifle
.50-70 GOVT Marked “USN/SPRINGFIELD/1870”
Here we present an antique U.S. Navy Springfield Model 1870 Rolling Block Rifle, manufactured at the Springfield Armory circa 1870. This rifles employs the Remington Arms Company rolling block design and was manufactured under a royalty agreement with Remington, for use by the United States Navy as a shipboard small arm. Only 22,013 were produced, with the first shipment of 10,000 rejected by the Navy. This rifle would have been on ships like the Colorado, Alaska, Palos, Monocacy, and Benicia when they sailed for the United States Expedition to Korea in 1871.
This rifle is equipped with a leather sling with “US ORD. DEPT.” markings. The lock is marked “EAGLE/USN/SPRINGFIELD/1870”. The right side is also marked “P/H.B.R./ANCHOR”. The top of the butt pate is marked “US”.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are mostly clear and legible. The walnut stock shows handling marks and remains solid. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a scarce 1870 Navy Rifle from Springfield!
