Description:
This is one heck of a Type 99 Arisaka that is fresh out of the "woodwork" so to speak.  It was just purchased directly from the USMC veteran's family that brought it back from the Pacific Theater.  It was taken from a KIA Japanese soldier on Saipan and had a chunk of shrapnel stuck in the stock just above the trigger on the right side which has since been lost.  This Japanese rifle is 100% original with an intact mum and all matching numbers, and it is 100% complete with the often-missing dustcover, monopod, and airplane sights.  It is a 23rd "Series" rifle, serial number 74106.  While there is some old scattered light surface rust remnants, the original blue finish still shows glossy and bright overall.  The dustcover is in excellent shape and is numbered with the last 3 digits of the serial number on the rear edge, and the original bolt is also in great shape and numbered on the bottom bolt handle root.  The bore is chrome lined and like-new, with no pitting, erosion, or imperfections showing whatsoever.  The original rear sight with the flip-out airplane sight wings is in excellent shape and functions as it was designed to, and the front sight is also in excellent condition.  The original stock has a great look to it and still has 95% of the original factory finish remaining.  As mentioned before, this rifle took a shrapnel hit from a grenade or naval gun along with the soldier carrying it, and has a good-sized puncture in the right side just above the trigger.  The damage was limited to the wood but you can see the trigger stem if you look thru the shrapnel puncture.  All of the Kokura inspection stamps are still nice and clean and legible on the stock, and all of the original hardware is still intact and tight to the wood.  The finish on the barrel bands is consistent with the rifle, with the top band numbered with the last 3 digits of the serial number on the bayonet lug.  The often missing monopod is still intact on this Arisaka and is in great shape with the proper spring tension.  The original cleaning rod is even still in this Type 99, and it is in superb shape with no bends or imperfections.  This Type 99 Arisaka is 100% functional and complete.  All of the controls work properly, and the action is smooth and locks into battery with no slop.  If you have been looking for a top quality, investment worthy Japanese Type 99 rifle, this Kokura example would be a great choice.  It is fresh into the collecting community and is unmolested.  The fact that it has a shrapnel puncture in the stock just adds intrigue and provenance to this rifle that it was no rear echelon guard weapon, this Type 99 was on the front lines in Saipan and was only captured because the Japanese soldier carrying it was killed!  An amazing piece of World War 2 history.
