Marked Antique PENNSYLVANIA Half-Stock Long Rifle
With Knife-Shaped Escutcheon in the Stock
Here we present an antique Back Action Half Stock Rifle, made circa the 1840s in Pennsylvania. This .34 caliber rifle was made for hunting and could be employed in a pinch to defend the homestead. This rifle bears the maker’s initials “B-E” on the top barrel flat. The right side of the stock bears a decorative escutcheon shaped like a large fighting knife. This rifle is equipped with a double set trigger for precision shots. The butt plate, trigger guard, fore end cap, and ramrod tubes are of brass. Rear sight is elevation adjustable. This is a very attractive rifle that bears a unique décor and the maker’s initials.
The overall condition is good. The iron parts bear a gray-brown patina. The brass parts are dark with age. The foremost ramrod tube and the front sight have been soldered in place. The stock is smooth and solid with light handling marks. The bore is in good condition with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp.
