Description:
This J.P. Sauer & Sohn drilling was the Mercedes Benz of drillings in it's day, and remains a spectacular work of fine craftsmanship today.  This Sauer was buil after Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party came to power in Germany.  At that time in Germany the arms firms making rifles, shotgun, drillings, and military arms were making some of the nicest weapons the world had ever seen.  In Germany and Austria in particular, as well as other areas in Western Europe, the "drilling" combination gun was extremely popular.  There were numerous companies making these weapons, but the J.P. Sauer & Sohn firm which was first established in 1751 and Germany's oldest gunmaker was the best.  Sauer & Sohn offered many different variations in gauge and caliber, as well as different grades from basic drillings to very ornate presentation guns, but they were all of top quality construction and fit and finish.  This has a  design which is very strong with two locking lugs on the bottom of the barrels.  The 23 & 5/8ths inches long barrel cluster is composed of 2 "Krupp Laufstahl" (fluid steel) 16 gauge barrels over a rifle barrel chambered in the 7mm Mauser Rimmed cartridge (8x57 R.)  It featured a top tang-mounted selector which when on the rifle setting raises a rear sight blade on the rib with a zero setting of 100 meters.  The double triggers worked as any other double barrel shotgun when the selector was set for the shotgun, but when the rifle barrel was selected only the front trigger was used, either pulled as it was for a heavy trigger pull or pushed forward from the rear as a single-set trigger with a very light pull to fire.  The safety is mounted on the left side of the stock, beautifully inlaid above the double triggers and it functioned as a normal safety regardless of what was selected to fire.  This drilling also features visual and tactile cocking indicators, located on the top of the upper tang on either side of the action lever.  When cocked there are brass pins that raise out of the action that correspond to each barrel.  The pins to the far right and left are for the right and left shotgun barrel respectively, while the pin just to the left of the lever is the indicator for the rifle.  This feature is often only seen on high end shotguns and drillings because of the cost and complexity of incorporating them.  This drilling has beautifully installed double claw mount scope bases.  They were most certainly installed at the factory and allowed the use of optics that could be removed and replaced easily while maintaining the set "zero".  This Sauer & Sohn is 100% original and in excellent condition overall.  While the original finishes show some honest wear and age, the mechanics are in perfect working order.  The receiver, tangs, and trigger guard which were factory case hardened still show nice traces of the case colors, particularly in the protected areas. The original factory blue finish on the barrels and action lever still looks great as you can see in the pictures.  There are some handling marks and a few small areas of thinning finish, but the blue finish rates a solid 95% and is very attractive.  The 16 gauge shotgun barrels have minty bright bores with no bulges, dents, or pitting. They are like new! The 7mm rifle bore are like new,  It is very accurate.  The original checkered Walnut stock set is in great shape overall.  While the checkering is a little worn and there are some small dings and dents from the last years of it's life, the wood is perfect except for a few scratches. .   This drilling has factory sling swivels, one mounted on the rifle barrel and one mounted on the keel of the buttstock.  Everything on this weapon works 100% like the day it left the factory and while it shows some honest light wear, it is still very attractive, elegant, and classy.  If you have been looking for a 100% original pre-WW2 top-quality drilling for your collection or to take afield, this J.P. Sauer would be a great investment.    MAKE OFFER! 305 342 2768
