FRENCH Antique Model 1822 Flintlock MUSKETOON
Very Nice Flintlock Covered with Markings!
Here we present an antique French Model 1822 Flintlock Musketoon, made circa the 1820s in Liege. Liege has long been a manufacturing center for the world’s arms trade and at this time was a part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Model 1822 was in use in the years following Napoleon Bonaparte’s defeat and the following internal political and social upheaval.
This one is in musketoon configuration. This was a shortened version of the full-length rifle, generally issued to troops who could especially use a shorter, lighter weapon such as cavalry, artillery, sappers, etc. This rifled musket is marked on every part with letters, numbers, and symbols. The top of the barrel is Liege proofed. The barrel tang is marked with a partially visible “1822”. There is a bayonet lug on the underside of the barrel near the muzzle.
The overall condition is very good. Metal surfaces have been polished back to the original bright finish. The markings are mostly clear. The stock is smooth, glossy and in great shape. The bore is semi-bright with good rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. This rifle looks great, would make an interesting study in markings, and should be a joy to fire.
