This rifle uses the Wyley Patent breech which operates by rotating the breech-block to the right. The movement of the breech simultaneously extracts the cartridge case, and cocks the action, although, the action can also be cocked manually. The barrel is finished in-the-white with thin, dark brown freckling along its length, getting darker brown at the muzzle and breech ends. The breech-block retains visible remnants of the original color case-hardening, but is mostly pewter gray, as are the trigger guard, and rear portion of the frame. The rifle is equipped with a hooded, spirit-level front sight, and has a rear barrel sight, however the ladder is not graduated, and there is no slider. A large vernier rear sight is mounted on the oddly-shaped buttstock, which has a full pistol-grip and filled backsight inletting on the short comb. The checkered forend has an expertly repaired crack (visible only with the forend taken off the barrel), and has an intact horn forend tip with refreshed checkering. The buttstock has some scattered minor handling marks, mostly along the comb where the edges of the rear sight have come to rest in the past. The checkered butt has some wear at the heel, as well as some flattening of the points. The rifle is housed in a period, unlined wooden traveling case along with a set of period reloading tools. This very rifle, along with the case, tools, and accessories, is pictured on page 82 of βThe British Single Shot Rifle β Volume 6: Webley, Kynoch, and Eley" by Walter G. Winfer (2004). The Wyley action is rarely encountered, especially in North America, and this example is in fine overall condition. It would make a splendid addition to any collection of British single-shot rifles, or competition guns.
