Description:

W.W. Greener of Birmingham, “Unique” Grade G3 Boxlock Ejector 12 gauge.

Offers?  This classic English double by W. W. Greener, circa 1898, serial number 462xx, is in very good condition. Beautifully engraved scenes of dog and wildfowl on the scroll-backed frame, with fine scroll engraving around the game scenes, top lever, trigger guard, fences and barrel breeches. Right lock includes scene of gun dog and perched wildfowl, while left lock has scenes of woodcock in flight. Raised game rib includes engraving of two partridges at breech, while bottom plate includes engraved hare and two partridges.

Chokes are appx. 1/4 and ½ choke. The 28” sleeved barrels with sight bead have excellent measurements, and come in at .730 and .729 for right and left bore diameters, 31 thousandth for the right wall thickness, and 34 thousandth for the left wall thickness. The interiors of the bores are spotless mirrors. Game rib engraving reads “W.W. GREENER, 68 HAYMARKET, LONDON & ST. MARY’S SQUARE, BIRMINGHAM. WINNER AT THE LONDON GUN TRIALS 1875 1877 1878 & 1879.” Proof marks include original Birmingham “view” and definitive proof marks, and most recently British Nitro Proof (BNP) with crown mark over letters BNP at 3 tons per square inch. Virtually spotless condition on the interior, with no pitting and minimal powder marks on the breech and face; the barrels are flawless on the interior.

The 14 & ½ inch well figured, rounded pommel-grip stock has nice checkering throughout the hand and a dark grain, and includes a 2 inch ebonite recoil pad extension. The action locks up tight with absolutely no play, Greener crossbolt extension, 2 & ½” chambers, and has the Greener side safety. Brass oval on underside of stock suitable for engraving. Finely checkered fore-end has engraved Deeley latch release and inlaid wood tip. Weight is 7 lbs. 6 oz. Noted British shotgun specialist Jack Rowe observes that “the quality of all Greener guns was of the highest degree.”

Few cosmetic blemishes on the gun, including a small mark at the bottom of the left lock and 1mm scratch above the pin, and some faintness to the engraving, as would be expected on a 120+ year old antique, but overall very nice condition, with hand-made quality apparent throughout its manufacture.
The tiny scratch is purely a small cosmetic blemish.  It does not affect the function at all.  It is almost not noticeable, but I always disclose any imperfections, however superficial, so the buyer knows the exact state of the gun.  As one of the premier and recognized UK gun makers of the 19th and 20th century, this is a great combination of beauty and function without breaking the bank. Ready for your next century of shooting!

This is a pre-1898 firearm and qualifies as an antique with direct shipment to the purchaser. We are a US military family stationed in the UK, and ship via Royal Mail or FedEx at a flat rate of $60, which usually takes about a week to arrive in the US. Please note I am not a dealer and not an expert, but a private collector, have tried to enter all the details I am aware of for this gun, and will try to answer any questions as best I can. I am downsizing my collection and hope to find other US enthusiasts of classic English shotguns to re-home a few of these pieces. Very near offers considered.  Thanks for your interest.
