Description:
Model 1863 Contract Rifled Musket produced by the S. Norris & W.T. Clement Factory in Springfield Mass. This rifle is one of 3,000 produced directly for the state of Massachusetts between 1863-1864. Lockplate marked 1864 rear of hammer with Eagle Motif/U.S. S.N. & W.T.C./FOR/ MASSACHUSETTS right of hammer. In original .58 caliber with 40” round barrel fastened with 3 barrel bands with sling swivels & original tulip shaped ramrod intact. Iron fittings with metal surfaces finished in bright with 2 leaf folding rear sight showing majority of original blued finish. Top barrel flat stamped 1864 with left side marked with V/P/Eagle Motif with Inspector marks on left barrel flat. Buttplate tang stamped US with rack #15 below. Stock shows visible cartouche on left side above triggerguard. Left side of shoulder stock is marked with IC along with top of barrel at breech. Right side of stock is marked with 27 with unknown script directly below. Very good condition overall with crisp markings on lock & barrel. Bright metal surfaces have matching wear & color. Stock is very good showing a few typical scattered use marks. Mechanically sound with excellent bore.
