Colt 1877 “LIGHTNING” Double Action Revolver in .38
C&R Made in 1901
Here we present a Colt 1877 Lightning Double Action Revolver, made in 1901 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Model 1877 was Colt’s first venture into double action revolvers. It was quite successful, selling 166,849 from 1877 through 1909, primarily in .38 and .41 calibers. Nonetheless, there was some hesitation to move away from the single action mechanism, which had so proven itself. Famous adopters of the Lightning were William “Billy the Kid” Bonney and John Wesley Hardin, two legendary names of the American West.
The left side of the barrel is marked “COLT. D. A. 38”. The left side of the frame, underneath the cylinder is marked “PAT.SEPT.10.1871/ PAT.SEPT.15.1874/ PAT.JAN.19.1875” The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD, CT U.S.A.”.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces have a light, smooth patina. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The hard rubber grips are in good shape. The bore is clear and bright with strong rifling. The action on this revolver is excellent, strong and crisp.
