Description:
This classic Savage was manufactured in early 1901.  These hammerless lever action rifles are world renowned for their strength, reliability, accuracy, and their revolutionary rotary magazine with a visible cartridge counter that allowed them to be loaded with spitzer (pointed) bullets.  All of the competitors at the time used tube magazines slung under the barrel that allowed for more capacity but were dangerous in that if you used pointed bullets they would be loaded bullet tip-to-primer, risking detonation if the rifle were dropped.  The Rotary magazine of the Savage 99 not only remedied this problem, but also allowed for the usage of non-rimmed or semi-rimmed cartridges not available in other lever actions.  This rifle is serial number 13445 and was manufactured in the 3rd year of production, 1901.  At some point during it's 117 years of existence it was totally refinished, most likely within the last 30 to 40 years.  Both the metal and the wood were redone with a gloss blue finish on the metal parts and a glossy clearcoat being applied to the stock set, and the receiver was drilled and tapped for optics.  The blue finish is quite attractive, it is dark and has a nice luster to it.  There are some minor handling/storage marks if you look closely, but nothing that stands out.  The buttplate does show some very small speckling from minor surface rust being removed at some point, this can be seen in the pictures provided.  The stock set is in good overall condition as-refinished.  The forearm appears to be solid and 100% free from cracks or repairs.  The buttstock has some minor damage immediately behind the upper tang.  There is a small chip of wood missing beside a hairline crack that runs about an inch back from the tang.  The crack is very small and does not go deep into the wrist.  This area can also be seen in the pictures provided.  The bore in this Savage 99 is dark but does have strong rifling, and should still be accurate for target shooting or hunting.  The action on this Savage is nice and smooth but locks up tight with no play.  The trigger works perfectly.  Everything on this rifle works exactly as it was designed to.  This Savage 99 comes with a black nylon bandoleer loaded full of factory PPU brand .303 Savage jacketed soft-point ammunition.  This American classic would be a great addition to any vintage rifle collection
