Description:

VERY RARE Antique MASS. ARMS Single Shot Pistol

Only About 500 Produced, Engraved, Maynard Primed

Here we present a rare antique Massachusetts Arms Maynard Primed Single Shot Percussion Pistol, manufactured in the late 1850s. According to Jones, only about 500 were produced. In 1847 Colt received a contract for his Colt-Walker Revolver, but lacking any manufacturing capability himself, had to outsource to the Whitney Firearms Co. Once complete, Samuel Colt was able to take over production himself, and while he was at it, he lured several Whitney employees away with him to Hartford. Among those were William Miller and Joshua Stevens. They were secretly working on their own revolver, and when Colt found them out he fired them. They went on to continue their work on the design, first with Edwin Wesson, and then the Massachusetts Arms Co. upon Wesson’s death.

The initial design was one in which the hammer also revolved the cylinder. It was immediately attacked by Colt in a patent infringement lawsuit, which Colt won, effectively quashing the success of the revolvers, though they changed the infringing elements and continued to manufacture revolvers. They also took the cylinder completely out of the equation with this Single Shot model. Very few of these were made as it is hardly more effort to manually place a cap on the nipple when you have to load the little pistol from the muzzle anyway.

The Maynard tape door is marked “MAYNARD’S PATENT/SEP 22, 1845”. The frame and Maynard tape door are engraved.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are legible. The serial numbers match. The grips are in good shape and are numbered to match. The action on this pistol is strong.
