The Model 1877 was Colt’s first venture into double action revolvers. It was quite successful, selling 166,849 from 1877 through 1909, primarily in .38 and .41 calibers. Nonetheless, there was some hesitation to move away from the single action mechanism, which had so proven itself. Famous adopters of the Colt double action revolvers were William “Billy the Kid” Bonney and John Wesley Hardin, two legendary names of the American West. These revolvers were almost certainly purchased together in 1903 given their serial numbers and nearly identical wear patterns. The markings on these revolvers include “COLT’S PT F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD, CT U.S.A.” on the top of the barrel. The left side of the frame has “PAT. SEPT 19,1871/PAT. SEPT. 5,1874/PAT. JAN. 19,1875”. The left side of the barrel has “COLT D. A. 38”. The hard rubber grips feature the rampant colt. They come to you together in a briefcase style case with green velvet lining. The overall condition of both of these revolvers is near fine. They both have about 30% of the original blue finish. Case colors on the frames are faint but visible. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers of each match. The bores are sharp and bright. The grips are in good condition. The actions on both of these revolvers are excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a great opportunity to own these nearly consecutive Colt Lightnings! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 4-1/2 inches.
