Description:

GORGEOUS Antique Flintlock “KENTUCKY LONG RIFLE”

“R.W. BOOTH/CINCINNATI” Marked Lock

Here we present an antique Flintlock American Long Rifle with a Cincinnati Marked R.W. Booth Lock, made circa 1800.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.

Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

This was one of the first commonly used rifles for hunting and warfare in North America. It is characterized by an unusually long barrel, which is widely believed to be a unique development of American rifles that was not commonly seen in European rifles of the same period.

This rifle features a lock that is marked “R.W. BOOTH/CINCINATTI”, a documented maker. The barrel tang, shape of the patch box, and iron hardware is indicative of Southern make. Barrel is fully octagonal and a long 45-1/2 inches. It also features double set triggers for a precise shot. The maple stock has fantastic grain and is decorated with German silver escutcheons.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in great shape with a short hairline crack just forward of the lock. The bore is dark with clear rifling. The action on this rifle is strong. The rear trigger must be set first.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 45-1/2 inches.
