Description:

“G.A.R.” Marked Antique TRAPDOOR Springfield M1873

From “ZABRISKIE POST 38” in Jersey City, NJ

Here we present an antique Grand Army of the Republic “ZABRISKIE POST 38” Marked U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle, manufactured circa 1873 in Springfield, Massachusetts. This was the first trapdoor Springfield to be chambered for the powerful and famous .45-70 GOVT cartridge. The trapdoor rifle was the primary weapon in the U.S. military from the end of the Civil War to the end of the 19th Century, encompassing the Indian Wars and even the Spanish-American War in Cuba.

The stock is marked “ZABRISKIE POST/38” representing a Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) post located in Jersey City, New Jersey. The GAR was a fraternalanization composed of veterans of the Union Army, Union Navy, Marines and the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service who served in the American Civil War for the Federal forces. The group provided a community thatanized socially and advocated politically on behalf of veterans. They were instrumental in the creation of Memorial Day as a national holiday and considered it the “the day of all days in the G.A.R. Calendar”. Theanization officially dissolved with the death of its last member and last surviving veteran of the American Civil War, Albert Henry Woolson (1850-1956; imagine living through the American Civil War, WWI, WWII, & the Korean War), in 1956.

The Zabriskie Post No. 38 was named after Abraham Zabriskie (1841-1864), son of a very successful lawyer and New Jersey politician, who was a colonel (at age 23) in the 9th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. He fought at Richmond and at The Wilderness. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Drury’s Bluff in Virginia.

The lock on this rifle is marked “U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1873”. The top of the breech is marked “U.S./Model/1873”. Both sides of the butt stock are marked “ZABRISKIE POST/38”. This would have been a rifle purchased or gifted to theanization and either put on display or used for recreational shooting.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces bear traces of the original finish with most turning gray-brown with age. The markings are clear and legible. The bore is clear and bright with strong rifling. The stock is in great shape. The action on this rifle is excellent. Here is a rifle that has historical significance as a service weapon from the 1870s to the 1890s as well as the Civil War veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
