Description:
Winchester 40-82-260 Smokeless Cartridges for Winchester's Model 1886 Repeating Rifle. The 40-82 cartridge was introduced in 1886 along with the 45-90, both of black powder origin. Original loading for the 40-82 utilized a 245 grain bullet and in 1898 the bullet weight was increased to 260 grains. This square cornered green smokeless box is not even shown in Giles and Shuey's excellent book titled; ONE HUNDRED YEARS of WINCHESTER CARTRIDGES BOXES 1856-1956. The green colored smokeless box was changed from green to orange about 1902. However, we can date this box in the 1898 - 1902 time frame, making this an extremely rare box. The original patent date for this cartridge is: December 14, 1886 as noted on the box front label. Therefore, Winchester had this cartridge a good ten (10) years before they released it to the public, probably due to the mild steel barrels used at the time. The pictures show the condition of the box and ammo much better than I can describe them.
