Description:
Offered for sale is a very early U.M.C. Union Metallic Cartridge Company manufacturer of 38 Calibre (38-55) Central Fire ( Center Fire was not used until the early 1900's) Black Powder cartridges. Ballard introduced the 38-55 cartridge in 1876 and Winchester adopted it in 1884 for their single shot rifle. Remington merged with U.M.C. in 1912. Early black powder cartridges were loaded with a full 55 grains of black powder and by about 1887 the loading was reduced to 48 grains of black powder and continued to carry the 38-55 name. A close look at the picture of the cartridge heads on the box reveals they are unmarked, as are the cartridges heads themselves. Notice also the lack of the Winchester name on the box and only the names of Ballard and Marlin appear. Winchester did not load this cartridge until the single shot rifle was introduced. The pictures show the condition of the box and ammo much better than I can describe them. By buying this ammo, you are certifying you are over 21 years of age and there are no Federal, State or local laws prohibiting your purchase or possession of this ammo. Ammo can only be sold in the lower 48 states.
