Description:
The K-38 Target Masterpiece was introduced in 1946-7 and produced under that name until 1957. Afterward it was renamed the Model 14 and produced until 1982. It used the same square butt K frame as the M&P .38 (Pre-Model 10). Like the M&P, the Target Masterpiece’s ejector rod is unshrouded. It uses a 6-inch pinned and ribbed barrel with a 1/8” Patridge front sight on a plain ramp base. The rear sight is a Micrometer-click adjustable type. The front strap and backstrap have the standard 10-groove serrations. The 14 here has a .500-inch target hammer and a .500-inch serrated target trigger. The serial number indicates the year of production to be 1973, according to the Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition. The Model 14 is most remembered for its role as the sidearm of LAPD Officers Malloy and Reed in the TV show Adam 12 for seasons 1 and 2. They were later issued the Model 15 for season 3 and onward which was true for the LAPD as well. The change to the 15 with its 4-inch barrel allowed police officers to draw their revolvers faster at the cost of a slight reduction in accuracy. The 14 as shown has a nearly unnoticeable amount of holster wear at the very tip of the barrel. The bore is in excellent condition and is spotless. It appears to have not been used a great deal, which is supported by the light turn ring around the cylinder. The cylinder lockup is very tight. The hammer and trigger do have a small amount of finish wear. If not used for target competition, the 14 would be suited to plinking or teaching a new shooter how to use a revolver. It would also be useful for home defense. The 38 Special round it is chambered for is well suited for all these tasks and is available in a wide variety of bullet types and loads.
