Description:

c1840s TRYON PHILADELPHIA Full-Stock MILITIA Rifle

Pennsylvania Long Rifle in Percussion

Here we present an antique Tryon Full-Stock Militia Long Rifle, made circa the 1830s by George W. Tryon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Tryon family emigrated from Holland in the late-18th Century after father, John Jacob Tryon, made a successful business in trading goods in America. On the voyage oversea, the ship caught fire and he and his wife were killed, while his 6 young children were orphaned. Once the ship landed in Philadelphia, some of the children are known to have been apprenticed to tradesmen. Young George Tryon was apprenticed to gun maker Frederick Goetz. Goetz would go into a partnership with Tryon in 1811 and Tryon would buy him out later that year. The War of 1812 would be a boon for Tryon as he contracted to supply firearms for the young United States to ward off the invaders, the British. George Tryon was not only a successful gun maker, but a savvy businessman who would follow in his father’s footsteps to create a business, in fact several, that would culminate in the late 19th Century as a major affair for all things hardware, making, importing, selling everything from firearms to fishing tackle, cutlery to bicycles. The business would last for 4 generations in Philadelphia.

This rifle would have been originally built as a flintlock and it follows the pattern of Tryon’s militia type long rifle. The lock is marked “Tryon, Merrick & Co.” dating this piece to between 1832-37. This was a brief partnership that was devised to focus on the manufacture of firearms apart from all the other things the other business was dealing in. The top of the barrel is marked “TRYON” and “PHILADA”. The rear of the barrel bears a faint “P” surrounded by a starburst border which was the mark that many militia type rifles bore. The barrel is long and fully octagonal. The stock goes all the way to the muzzle with brass hardware throughout. This includes an attractive brass patch box with finial, butt plate, trigger guard, ramrod tubes, and fore end cap.

The overall condition is good. The iron parts bear a dark patina. The brass furniture is also dark with age. The markings are clear on the barrel and a bit obscured on the lock. The stock is in fair to good condition with a couple minor repairs. The bore is dark. The action is strong. Here is a very neat long rifle from Philadelphia that would have been great for putting food on the table, keeping the homestead safe, and, if duty called, fighting in the militia.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 44-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .40 Percussion
