Description:

Antique “A.A.J.” Marked HEAVY BARRELED Bench Rifle

With Whitmore, Wolff, Duff & Co. Philadelphia Lock

Here we present an Antique “A.A.J.” Marked Heavy Barreled Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century. This rifle is extremely heavy and would have been most ideally used off of a bench or a stump. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .40 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game.

These locks were called “back action” because the mainspring hangs behind the tumbler. The back action is often used in double rifles and occasionally in single barrel shotguns where the need for strength requires as little steel as possible be removed from the bar of the action. This lock was popular on percussion guns made in St. Louis, New York, California, Ohio, England and Belgium. Back Action percussion locks were a “late” developed style of lock. Used primarily on the hardware store line of guns, these locks did, however, show up on some better pieces in the mid-to-late 1800′s. Back Action locks are extremely fast and are often used on competition, squirrel, and light-weight boy’s rifles.

This rifle was originally equipped with another back action lock before this one was installed. The lock is marked “WHITMORE, WOLFF, DUFF & CO”, who were hardware dealers/lock manufacturers in Pittsburg, PA from 1858 through 1872. The top of the barrel is marked “A.A.J.”, the initials of the maker.

The overall condition is good. The barrel has an applied twist pattern. Markings are clear. The stock is in good shape. The bore is sharp and clean. The action is strong.
