NEW YORK Antique J.H. WHEELER Combination Gun
19th Century Combination Gun
Here we present an Engraved J.H. Wheeler Percussion Side by Side Percussion Combination Gun, made circa 1870. John H. Wheeler was active as a gunsmith in Otsego, New York from 1867 to 1882. This combination rifle-shotgun would have been a nice tool when hunting multiple different game in the field on one hunt. Theoretically, it also decreases the need for another gun, but we all know how that goes.
The top of both barrels is marked “J.H. WHEELER”. The right side of the stock features a built-in patchbox. The trigger guard, locks, and ramrod tube are neatly engraved. Each of the barrels has its own trigger. Rifle sights. The right barrel is rifled and .38 caliber while the left barrel is smooth and .67 caliber. The right hammer is not attached and will be included.
The overall condition is fair. The metal surfaces have a mixed patina. The markings are clear. The stock shows use and has been lightly sanded. The bores are dark and dusty. The action of the right may be usable once the hammer is replaced. The action on the left is functional.
