About 84,555 were made, making this one very near the end of production. The Winchester-Hotchkiss rifle was first conceived by Benjamin Hotchkiss in 1875 and by 1877 he had four US patents on the design which was sold to the Winchester company in early 1877. This was Winchester’s first bolt action rifle and their first firearm with a (6-round) magazine fed from the butt stock. It was marketed for military applications as well as a hunting rifle, but it would not see widespread use in the US military. This is an example of a very late 3rd Model. The tang is marked “MODEL OF 1883”. The barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE/ WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN.U.S.”. The breech end of the barrel is marked “45-70”. The trigger guard tang bears the patent information. This appears to have been a military rifle that has been modified long ago for a good hunting rifle. The rear sight is an adjustable tangent sight, the stock has been shortened ahead of the first barrel band, and the bolt handle has been turned down to give it a lower profile. Really a neat and very functional piece. The overall condition is near fine. The original blue finish is about 70% and the color case hardening vibrant. Markings are clear. The walnut stock is in great shape. The bore is bright and sharp. The action is excellent, sharp and crisp. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 28 inches. Caliber: .45-70 Government Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING. Will need to be sent to your local FFL or C&R licensee.
