Description:

BURNSIDE Rifle 1865 CONTRACT Model Spencer Carbine

Post-Civil War Repeating Rifle

Here we present an antique Burnside Rifle Co. 1865 Contract Model Spencer Carbine, manufactured circa 1865. On June 27, 1864, the Burnside Rifle Co. entered into a contract with the Ordnance Dept. to manufacture 30,500 .52-cal. M1860 Spencer carbines with deliveries completed by Aug. 31, 1865. With the changes directed to be made to the carbines, deliveries did not start until April 15, 1865, and they continued until the end of October, with about 30,496 M1865 Spencer carbines being delivered. In total, the Burnside Company made just over 34,000 of this carbine. The company paid Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. a royalty of 50 cents for each carbine delivered to the Ordnance Dept., and $1 was paid for the 4,000 Spencer carbines sold to military individuals and civilians. The Model 1865 Spencer repeating 7-shot carbine used a smaller 56-50 rimfire metallic cartridge as compared to the 56-52 rimfire cartridge used in the Civil War Model 1860 carbine. This Spencer also was engineered with a three groove rifling system along with a 20 inch long barrel fitted to its two piece walnut stock and fore-end. Many Spencers are known to have been used against Custer's cavalry at the Battle of Little Bighorn. This Burnside Contract Model 1865 is a great example of a weapon used by the US Federal Cavalry after the close of the Civil War and would make a beautiful addition to highlight any military display or rifle collection!

The top of the barrel is marked “SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/ PAT’S MARCH 6 1860/ MANUF’D AT PROV. R.I./ BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO.” There is a strangely placed ampersand on the top of the breech block.

The overall condition is very good. The iron surfaces are dark and smooth. The markings are clear. The serial numbers match. Butt stock and fore stocks are replacements. The bore is clean, shiny and well-rifled. The action is functional. The cartridge follower is absent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 20 inches.

Caliber: .56-50 Spencer
