This is what was known as a "bicycle gun"  This one is not a factory short barrel but has been cut down at some point in its life. The cut is really nicely done looks very good as you can see in the pictures. It seems to function well and the ejector mechanism works as it should. Since it was made during the smokeless era it should be safe with modern 38 S&W ammo. But have a gunsmith look it over before shooting it. The right grip has a chip out of the bottom as you can see in the pics.
