Rare SOUTH KOREAN Made COLT 1903 Hammerless Pistol
Early South Korean Domestically Produced Pistol
Here we present a South Korean Copy of a Colt 1903 Hammerless Pistol, made circa the 1950s, perhaps in Pusan. The Colt 1903 was used as a sidearm by officers during the Korean War, while the Colt 1911 was the sidearm of the troops. South Korea was known to copy the Model 1911, especially the Jin Iron Works in Pusan. These are generally of crude manufacture, sometimes with American made parts, especially barrels.
This one incorporates the grip safety as well as the slide safety as in the original. Craftsmanship is noticeably cruder than the original Colt. There is a small window in between the back of the slide and frame through which the internal hammer is visible. The left side of the slide is marked something like “KA7t2.19932/4282.10. ” A very similar piece (note the grips) can be found in J. Howard Mathews’ book Firearms Identification on page 403 (as shown in the photo section). Notice the distinctive pattern on the grips and note that the one in the book is missing parts like the slide safety. This one is not.
The overall condition is good. Surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The bore is sharp. The grips are in fair condition, there is a piece missing from the bottom of the right side. The action on this pistol is excellent.
