Description:

ROARING 20s Colt 1903 Hammerless Pistol MADE 1919

W/ Marked CHICAGO Von Lengerke & Antoinne Holster!

Here we present a Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless Pistol, made in 1919, with a Von Lengerke & Antoine Chicago Loop Holster. Approximately 570,000 of these pistols were produced from 1903 to 1945. In the 1920s and 1930s this was a very popular model with police and the public in the United States. Infamous users include Al Capone, John Dillinger, and Bonnie Parker among others.

This one was made on the cusp of the “Roaring 20s” and comes in a Von Lengerke & Antoine Chicago marked holster. This firm is perhaps best remembered today for its being linked to the many firearms transactions with the Al Capone Gang in Chicago. In fact, Thompson Machine Guns used in the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre were traced back to this store. VL&A was a younger sister company to Von Lengerke & Demond, which operated out of New York. VL&D was founded in 1882 and VL&A in 1892. They were fierce competitors with Abercrombie & Fitch, until they were both bought out by A&F in 1929. VL&A retained its name in Chicago until 1959 when it finally became another A&F store like VL&D had when the original acquisition took place. An article from the Daily Illini 21 June 1932 explains that “The von Lengerke and Antoine company occupied much police attention in 1929 following the St. Valentine’s day massacre of seven of George “Bugs” Moran gangsters in a North Clark street garage and police at that time made a complete record of all sub-machine guns sold in Chicago. It was from this record, police said, that the gun used in the Barker (George “Red” Barker, “labor racketeer and gangster” as described in the same article, as seen in the photos) killing was traced.” SEE THIS LISTING ON OUR ANCESTRYGUNS IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE READING THE ARTICLE ON THIS VENUE.

The left side of the pistol’s slide is marked “PATENTED/APR.20.1897 DEC.22.1903”. Also marked is "COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG.CO./HARTFORD,CT. U.S.A.”. The right side of the slide is marked “COLT AUTOMATIC/CALIBRE 32 RIMLESS SMOKELESS”. The holster is marked “VL&A/Chicago” under the loop. Holster is lightly tooled, features a retention strap, and appears to have been made for the 1903.

The overall condition is fine. About 75% of the original blue finish remains. The markings are clear and legible. The bore is clear and bright. The grips are very good with a small crack in the right panel back of the grip screw. The action on this pistol is excellent.
