Description:

REDUCED: The Nambu Type “A” Pistol in 8x22mm was introduced in 1902. The trigger guard was enlarged and the magazine bottom was changed from wood to aluminum. The second variant of the type “A” Model 1902 is known as the “Papa Nambu“. In 1902 the pistol was produced at Tokyo Arsenal. In 1909 production was started at Tokyo Gas and Electric, with a contract for 1500 pistols for the Japanese Navy.

After regular production ceased a large number of spare parts were available at both arsenals and Tokyo Gas and Electric assembled these parts in 1928. Pistols assembled after 1923 were marked with the symbols used by Tokyo Arsenal and Tokyo Gas and Electric. Papa Nambu Pistols marked with the symbols of both arsenals had a production of 674. The production numbers of all Type “A” pistols is approximately 8674. This is a rare handgun no matter which way it is marked.

All the parts have matching numbers except the bolt lock/striker spring guide and magazine. The magazine’s number is 6 digits lower than the pistol's serial number. The bolt lock/striker spring guide’s number is 14 digits lower than the pistol’s number. Collectors in have told me, it is not unusual to see serial numbers of small parts differ but be very close to the pistol’s number. The pistol was likely assembled with these mixed numbered parts at the Arsenal.

The pistol does not appear to be re-blued. It has some places that have some light pitting on the frame as if the holster contacted it. The pistol is fully functional but I have not fired it. The trigger still has some of the straw color on it. The bore is shiny with some light pitting. The left grip has a 3/16" square chip out of it, at the top right of the grip. The light pitting is logical because the pistols were used by the Japanese Navy and salt water can be very corrosive.
