Offered for sale is a very rare and early box of .32 Winchester Special Cartridges with 170 grain soft point bullets. This is believed to be the first box listing a 170 grain bullet weight and carries an 8/15 label date. The 32 Winchester Special was introduced by Winchester in 1902 as a smokeless powder load for Winchester's model 1894 rifle and as a supplement to their older 32-40 black powder cartridge. Smokeless powder was new then and people wanted to reload cartridges with their trusted black powder. The 32 special being much rarer than the 30-30 gave the shooter that option and when reloaded with black powder was essentially a 32-40 . The 30-30 with its faster twist rate could not be effectively reloaded with black powder. The pictures show the condition of the box and ammunition much better than I can describe them.
