Description:
A uniquely RARE specimen of a Civil War Combat weapon...This CW Revolver that  I inherited from my Grandmother Tripp nee BRAGG..nephew of CSA Gen'l. Braxton Bragg. I have NO provenance to show..BUT I DO know MY ancestry..! What I am offering is a most unusual battle weapon.   During this conflict  firearms were in sore need by the  Confederate forces as the South was not able to produce enough GOOD weapons to satisfy the CSA's needs. Many damaged weapons especially Long gungs were repaired from battlefield discards. Obviously, handguns were choice weapons for Cavalry/Officers etc. This particular pristine- genuine Whitney obviously had a damaged barrel...BUT the remaining frame & parts were armory gunsmithing mated  to each other..(SOMEHOW) undocumented was the mating of a guine-Nice 1858(?) Remington 36cal.  barrel that had a damaged frame. It is not known which  Armory was able to "mate"-"alter" the Remington barrel to the Whitney frame rendering the Whitney a truly valuable & serviceable weapon .Remember this BOTH revolvers were NOT junkers BUT very salvageable weapons worth saving...! : The mating of the "two" revolvers is/was a marvel by the armory..obviously something done decades ago during stressful times & NOT something a person would do in more modern times... definitely NOT some 'bubba's work.  "The "patina"-( I dislike that term)...is and remains UNTOUCHED.! ..including the orig. numbered grips.  The Remington bore is absolutely as NEW--obviously had little use when damaged-mated....the rifling is near PERFECT where it joins the Whitney forcing cone...! The Whitney charging arm & packer is original to the Whitney. Simply a marvelous union of BOTH makers...!  The Whitney Forum folk(Dan Williams) was able to find  inspectors mark(s) "A" on opposite sides of the Remington barrel and opined the top flat barrel inscription is of an Early "wartime" address..see photos...Remington is somewhat feint to view but the rest is quite vivid. I will  allow a 3day inspection of this revolver for return of "undisturbed" exterior along with interior parts as delivered. This has been disassembled and professionally documented by varied methods(my being a retired Investigator).. It is very difficult to place a Fair estimate of value on such an historic item...esp. a firearm.  I 'll ship this item FREE...BUT the winner will pay  for the addt'l. Insurance am't. chosen. More photos available via request.
