Description:
***   SOLD   ***   Beautiful Churchill 12 bore pigeon gun made in 1898 with full coverage engraving and unique tapered sidelocks. Made as Number 1 of a pair with gold inlays on toplever, barrel and forearm. While this double was made prior to the introduction of the Premier Grade it has that same elaborate style of engraving with lots of residual case coloring. A letter from the maker indicates that it is a “Very Best Quality Bar Action Pigeon Gun” and Churchill was considered one of the best makers of pigeon guns at the time.   ***   The action is fully engraved, has double triggers and shows a lot of residual case coloring. Overall weight is 7lb 8oz.   ***   The 30” Whitworth steel barrels have auto ejectors and are topped by a raised solid wide crosshatched pigeon style rib. Original 2-3/4” chambers. The left barrel is marked “8 Agar St. Strand London W.C.” The right barrel is marked “E.J. Churchill Gun & Rifle Manufacturer”. The left barrel is bored 0.733 with a constriction of 0.030 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.025. The right barrel is also bored 0.733 and has a constriction of 0.030 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.025. The shiny bores have not been altered. There is a small amount of freckling on the outside of the left barrel above the forearm - see next to last photo. Black powder proofed but can be safely shot with low pressure loads like those available from RST Shotshells.   ***   The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured walnut and beautifully finished. The checkering is crisp. Stock dimensions are 14-3/8” over a 3/4” rubber recoil pad by 1-1/4” by 2-1/4”. Cast off for the righthanded shot.   ***   Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense if the gun is not as described in the listing.
