Description:
SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 octagon barrel. S/N 413119 and made in 1892. This is a nice and never fooled with 1873 Winchester. It is in the very sought after 44-40 caliber. Not my favorite caliber for shooting as the 38-40 always shoot much better than the 44's, but this is what everyone wants so here it is.... Has the standard 24” octagon barrel. Actually measure 24 1/4” as is correct. The bore is very good with strong rifling and just the minor spots of roughness from black powder and corrosive primers that were used in the day. NO big pits or craters and NO rings or bulges. It shoots just fine for a 44 caliber. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly and as designed. No backed out primers or bulged cases and the head space is perfect. Perfect hammer safety and full cock notches very positive and correct. Strong carrier and lever springs throughout. Has that “snappy” sound and feel to it when you run the action. Still has the original dust cover that is still tight and retracts with the lever throw as is suppose to. Has the original rear sight and elevator. The front sight has the original base but the blade has been replaced long ago and is just a tad taller than the original. These blades often broke loose and were simply replaced with what ever was available. Very good and clean job and does not detract from this ole 73. Markings are all very good but the caliber markings on the bottom of the brass carrier are worn off. Very common as this is the balance carry point and the brass is soft so many are found with these worn or completely gone. The barrel address is a little light on the first part of the top line from a little wear and a tipped die roll as many of these are found but completely readable. Just had the wrong angle on my camera in the photo. I can send more photos of anything you might want to see and try to do a better job. The over all metal is a nice and smooth dark brown patina that has not been cleaned to the gray color you see so many of these have from being cleaned in the past 50 plus years. This one is just the way you love to find them. No pitting on the gun but just a very little light pin prick type on the front top of the receiver and a little of the same on the front end of the dust cover. You can see this in the caliber marking photo on the barrel. This is from black powder flash and is very minor and no attempt to clean or messed with. The butt plate has some surface crud and roughness as expected..The barrel has some dings and mars to the edges as a well used rifle will show from honest use. Some dings on the left side of the receiver also as you can see in the photos and some smaller ones on the top of the receiver below the dust cover. The wood is nice and not all busted or cracked. The forearm has one very small and very tight grain split on the front left side behind the end cap. It is very small and hardly visible and most minor but it is there and I want to be exact in my descriptions. No other splits or cracks but shows a little decay were it meets up with the receiver as you can see in the close up photo. Fits tight and fits proud to the metal in places. The butt stock is good also with no splits or cracks but has more dings and shows wear in places. Still fits tight and also proud to the metal in the more protected areas. Nothing undersized. The screw heads are nice and clean and not all burred up from amateur tinkering. The main spring screw shows some turning but all of them are serviceable. All in all, this is a very honest used 73 that shows honest use but not abused. Octagon barrel and 44-40. Functions perfect with good bore at a very reasonable price. These are getting very hard for me to find that I can sell for less than $2500.. There are better ones out there no doubt but you won't buy them for this price !!!! Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. I want happy customers and will send more photos directly to you and answer any question you may have. $50 insured shipping. If you are interested, do not delay in calling me as these usually sell fast and I get many calls AFTER the gun has sold. Thank you for looking and check back often as possible.
