CIVIL WAR Antique AMES U.S. Medical Staff Sword
Scarce U.S. Dress Sword for Surgeons
Here we present an antique Civil War Ames U.S. Army Medical Staff Sword, made circa 1860 in Chicopee, Massachusetts by Ames Manufacturing Company. There were written regulations for the U.S. Army Medical Corps that specified the requirement for surgeons and assistant surgeons to obtain and wear dress swords. The rare Model 1840 Ames Medical Staff sword was fairly unique when compared to the sword patterns for both Staff and Field/Line officers and Non-Commissioned officers of the same time period. These swords were elegant in design and completely ceremonial in purpose.
This sword features a pineapple shaped pommel and a guard consisting of two scrolled quillons decorated with leaf motifs. Along with beautiful patriotic etching, the blade is marked “U.S. MEDICAL STAFF”. The base of the blade is marked “AMES MFG/CHICOPEE/MASS.” The shield shaped langet bears an “M.S.”
The overall condition is near fine. The blade is 31 inches long. The etching and markings on the blade are legible, clear and intact. The handle and hand guard is in fine condition. There is movement in the handle and quillon.
