Description:
Boss & Co. Best Sidelock Asst. Opening Ejector, circa 1906, 12 bore, 2 3/4" chambers, 28" fluid steel barrels choked .007 Skt. and .016 Lt. Mod., original 1 1/8 oz. nitro proof and 3 1/4 Tons London nitro reproof for 2 3/4" chambers, 6 lbs. 9 oz., 14 1/2" LOP over a leather pad, 1 5/8" DAC, 2 5/8" DAH, 1/8" cast off, Boss single trigger, automatic safety with "Safe" in gold, straight grip, splinter forend, smooth concave game rib engraved "Boss & Co., 41 Albemarle Street, Piccadilly, London, W" and gold inlayed "2", rebarreled by Boss in approx. 1939 and then reproved for 2 3/4" chambers in 1960's, highly figured walnut with drop points, fine recut checkering and a refreshed oil finish, best fine engraving showing fine small scroll work at 18 rose boquets in the typical Boss house style, retains , side of actions engraved "Boss & Co." in a banner and "Boss's Patent " on the action bar, "Boss's Patent no. 22894" is engraved on the trigger plate which refers to Boss's single trigger patent, a gold inlay "2" is also on top of action and in forend iron, gun was originally No. 2 of a trio, gold lined cocking indicators, rolled edge trigger guard, vacant gold oval in stock, barrels retain nearly all of their original blue, action retains nearly all the color of an older re-casehardening done when the barrels were reproved, forend wood was replaced also at that time. Action is tight and on face, ejectors work and are in time. Comes in period maker's oak and leather case with a newer maker's label showing the Cork St. address which likely was replaced when the barrels were reproved. Bores both measure .730 and the min. wall thickness is .029 and .028.  All in all, a very lovely old Boss that has been well maintained by Boss over the decades. For those of you who like long LOP's, keep in mind that single trigger guns are measured from a "back" trigger position compared to double trigger guns. This is the same stock length that would measure 15" if it was a double trigger measurement.
