Description:
U.S. Springfield Model 1886 Experimental Carbine.  First time listing on GI...Have A+ rating on GB and 100% positive feedback on ebay.

Only 1000 Trapdoor Model 1886 Experimental .45-70 Carbines with 24” barrels were made at the Springfield Armory for field trials or testing. The military was looking to produce a better carbine believing a longer barrel would increase long-range accuracy. The experimental carbines were made early 1886 and sent to be tested in the field that August. Even though the carbine performed well in field trials the Ordnance Dept. recalled all the M1886 in Experimental Carbines in 1888. The Model 1886 Experimental Carbine had a 24” barrel with a full length stock with an overall length of 43 1/4 inches. The stock is equipped with a contoured barrel band, sling swivel and a saddle bar and ring. The barrel band was contoured so it would fold back when placed in a leather carbine scabbard. The carbine was also equipped with a new Buffington rear sight stamped on the upper right-hand corner “XC” for experimental carbine. Overall condition of this carbine is very good plus and priced whey below any other Model 1886 Experimental Carbine currently listed for sale right now. Take a good look at the pictures for overall condition. Not much finish remaining (greying) with no normal wear devoid of pitting. For what ever reason many of these M1886 carbines all show evidence of sanding. Not sure why. They also seem to have been refinished or re-blued at some point perhaps when they were sent back to the arsenal. The stock was in questionable condition showing evidence of sanding when I received it so I reached out to Doug Turnbull for restoration work. I was referred to Romano Rifle Co. (highly recommend) because they specialize in military firearm restoration especially wood work. They worked their magic on the stock restoring it to its original military specs. They did an amazing job. The metal is all in original unaltered condition with little or no finish. The front sight cover (M1883) was designed specifically for this carbine. Very rare. Also included is the 3-piece cleaning rod which is 1 inch longer. Made specifically for the M1886. Not sure if its a repo or not. I can't imagine someone would make repo cleaning rods because so few of these experimental rifles were made. Who knows...I can't say for certain because it looks new. This is a real bargain so don't let it get away. There's a lot of info on the internet so do some research it's a pretty unique carbine. Please email if you have any questions or woul like additional pictures.  You wont be disappointed in this rifle.  Would consider trade for nice Sharps Carbine.....  I do have this carbine listed elsewhere so please contact me for availability. Thank you!
