Description:
This is a beautiful vintage Smith & Wesson Model 15-3 with a 2" inch pinned barrel in a factory nickel finish.  The Model 15 was introduced in 1949 as the "K-38 Combat Masterpiece" and was offered in a 2" inch or 4" inch barrel and blue or nickel finish with an adjustable target-style rear sight.  The Model 15 was built on the "K" frame and was a 6-shot double action with a square butt.  It was a commercial success for Smith & Wesson and was produced for 50 years until it was discontinued in 1999.  During that production run S&W offered a 6" inch barrel and 8 & 3/8ths inch barrel for short periods of time.  This example is serial number 10K4435 and was manufactured in 1977.  It is an original finish gun in very good condition overall.  The factory nickel finish is still bright and very attractive but has some minor handling marks on it, in particular there are two small spots on the left side of the frame where the finish is marred up.  One of the marred spots is just above the cylinder release latch, and the other is on the same side of the frame just behind the trigger.  There are close-up pictures of these areas so you can see what I am referring to.  The bore in this 15-3 is minty and bright, free from pitting or erosion with strong rifling.  The cylinder bores are equally as nice and clean.  The sights are in excellent shape, with a clean serrated front sight blade and the rear adjustable sight in excellent working condition.  The factory checkered Cocobolo grips are in good shape overall.  They are free from cracks or repairs and the checkering is still clean and crisp.  The right grip panel has two spots of light damage which you can see inthe close-up picture of that grip.  These two spots are located at the curved lower left edge of the grip, and to the left of the grip screw in the channel that runs around the checkering.  While the grips fit this gun almosty perfectly they are not the serial numbered originals so they could be swapped out if the new owner so chooses without reducing the value of the gun.  The action on this Model 15-3 is smooth and precise and locks up tight.  It is "in time" perfectly whether using single or double action modes of operation.  Everything works on this S&W 100% like the day it left the factory.  These 2" inch Model 15's are somewhat scarce today particularly in an original factory nickel finish.  If you have been looking for a nice K-38 Combat Masterpiece to add to your collection that is nice enough to be an investment, but not too nice that you would feel bad shooting it, this 15-3 would be an excellent choice!
