The Savage Model 24D Combination Gun was introduced in 1971 and was offered in .22 long rifle or .22 magnum over a .410 or 20 gauge, and with a case colored frame or black finish. The game scene decoration that was standard was eliminated in 1974, and the checkering on the forearm was eliminated in 1976. They were quite popular with the public and were a commercial success for the Savage firm. This particular example is in excellent all-original condition and is quite attractive. While we cannot pinpoint the exact year it was manufactured we know that it was made between 1974 and 1976 because it does not have the game scene decoration but does have a checkered forearm. The case colored finish is beautiful on this Savage with lots of bright colors showing and no signs or wear. Typically the first thing to go on these combo guns is the finish on the bottom of the receiver at the balance point. As you can see in the pictures, there is no thinning of the finish at this point on the gun or anywhere else, leading us to believe that this Savage has spent most of it's life in storage. The factory blued barrels are just as nice as the case colors, rating 98% plus. The checkered Walnut stock set is like-new as well. Both the forearm and buttstock are free from any wear, cracks, repairs, or damage of any kind. The original factory wood varnish rates 98% plus. The bores in both the rifle and shotgun barrels are in mint condition. The .22 rimfire barrel is bright and clean with strong rifling, and the 3" inch chamber 20 ga. shotgun barrel is bright and clean with no pitting, dents, or bulges. Everything on this Model 24D is 100% functional like the day it left Savage's factory. These Savage combo guns have become quite collectible over the last 20 years, and are thought of as a great investment. You would be hard pressed to find a better example of the Savage Model 24D than this one!
