Description:
This is a very cool old vintage Marlin pump rifle.  This is a Model 27-S rifle, an improved version of the Model 27 which had a safety button on the right side of the receiver.  Introduced in 1911, the Model 27-S was made until the outbreak of World War 1 at which point production was halted until the end of the war, when production was resumed until 1932.  The Marlin 27-S pump-action rifle featured a take-down design and was offered in .25RF, .25-20 WCF, and .32-20 WCF in a round or octagon 24" inch barrel, with a 7-shot tubular magazine mounted under the barrel, and a Walnut straight-grip stock set.  This particular example is serial number 14705, and was made circa 1914-15 pre-WW1.  It is in 100% original condition and is completely functional.  The original factory blue finish rates 75% or better, and has a great consistent look to it.  The blue shows some age, some spots of prior surface rust,  and some handling marks that you would expect from a 100 plus year old gun.  It was certainly used/carried at some points during it's life but apparently was well cared for.  The receiver has never been drilled and tapped for optics and the original iron sights are still intact.  The bore in this Marlin is good overall.  It shows some strong rifling with prominent lands and grooves.  There is some light pitting throughout but nothing major, and we are confident that it would shoot very well today.  Many of these Model 27-S Marlins have terrible shot-out bores given that corrosive ammunition was the standard when many were built.  The original factory Walnut stock set is in great shape oversall.  It shows some dings, dents, and handling marks from use but also has a great deal of original vanish on it still intact.  Both the forearm and buttstock appear to be free from cracks or repairs, and the original crescent shaped metal buttplate is still in place and tight to the wood.  Everything on this interesting Marlin works as it was designed to.  The action is still nice and tight and all of the controls work properly.  The rifle takes down into two pieces with ease, and goes back together nicely.  The internals of this Marlin do not show much wear and everything fits together tightly without any slop.  If you have been looking for a cool and unique vintage pump rifle for your collection made by one of America's famous gunmakers, this Marlin Model 27-S would be an excellent choice.  With .25-20 ammunition available at most gun stores it could be enjoyed at the range as well.
