#28937, A Farquharson Falling Block Single Shot that was originally finished July 10, 1905 and then completely and totally found a new life in South Africa with Danie Joubert in Pretoria, He is a master metalsmith (Check the Photos), It has a 24" Musgrave barrel, A 1/4 rib with 1 standing & 3 folding rear sights, A barrel band sling eye, A band front ramp with a spring actuated & locking sight protector, Prior to stocking it was sent off to Tinus Els to be engraved with a near matching style and coverage of the original engraving done in 1905, It was then stocked by Bennie Laubscher in a pure classic English style, A shadowline cheekpiece, Horn forend tip, Point pattern checkering, A screw out trap grip cap, It has 85% coverage of very well cut engraving by Els, 15" LOP over a 7/8" Silvers pad, 9 Lbs. 11 oz., To this very day the overall blue remains at 99%, The oil finished stock remains at 98%, The checkering is still 100%, The bore remains as new. It is cased in a brass cornered leather trimmed canvas trunk complete with the original barrel stub when used as a "Trap Gun" for dispatching Leopard & Hyena's (See Below). This gun is very accurate as it has produced a 3 shot group of 7/8" at 100 yards with the open sights using 480 grain Woodleigh bullets.
There are no apologies with this South African Classic; if you compare it to any of the pre-war British big bores this piece makes them look very basic and plain. The overall fit, finish, handling and proper dimensions are well beyond any of the early classic pieces. This serious Falling Block rifle looks like a real Big Bore that is ready to go back to the continent from which it came to do some very serious work. In my 53 years of handling some of the best Classic single shot rifles made in the U. S., England & Europe, these South African guys don't need to take a back seat to any of them. Look at the photos; you will see what I am talking about. I can assure you the metal work is absolutely top drawer. The wood inletting is proper, clean, sharp and absolutely functional; it makes most all the continental stockers and many Americans look like they are still in grade school. This is South Africa; B. W. Laubscher and D. C., Danie, Joubert. I can say with absolute certainty that this finished rifle is not their first attempt or their first rodeo. This is nice stuff with a neat action, super cartridge, superb bore and by a couple of guys that know right from wrong.
This Farquharson started life as #28937 at Cogswell & Harrison in 1905. On September 6, 1906 it was delivered to Tozer, Kemsley & Fisher for 26 British pounds & 5 shillings, a firm that dealt in Motor Cars. In the early 1970's John Herbert ran into this Farquharson action at Buck De Vries ranch in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). My wife, Mo, has been to this ranch. The action had an 8" barrel that Buck used as a "Trap Gun" for dispatching Leopard & Hyena's. The 8" barrel was welded to a frame and a wire to the trigger, a piece of meat attached and shot the predator in the head when the meat was pulled. Years later it finally ended up in the capable hands of Danie Joubert. Harry John Herbert was a research Mammologist in Nigeria & South Africa, Research Officer of Wankie National Park in Zimbabwe, Primate research in Puerto Rico, Biologist-in-Charge in Libya, Senior Consultant with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife in Puerto Rico, Wildlife Ecologist in Zimbabwe and an Instructor at the University of Botswana. That is just some of all his accomplishments.
