CIVIL WAR Imported Antique FOOT OFFICER’S Saber

Here we present an antique Imported Cavalry Saber, manufactured circa 1860 by W. Walscheid, Solingen, Germany. This saber was imported during the war and privately purchased by many. This is a particularly handsome sword with a straightforward patriotic motif of a federal eagle with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in a banner above. The guard would have provided good protection to the hand and was a thrust and cut weapon. The blade is faintly etched with voluptuous scrolls with “US” in the middle on one side and presumably an eagle with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on the other.
The ricasso is marked “W. WALSCHEID/SOLINGEN” on one side and the other is marked “PROVED”. The hand guard is marked “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
This sword is in very good condition. The iron hilt bears a dark patina with clear markings. Scabbard likewise is dark with age. The acid etching on the blade is faint due to use. The ray skin and wire grip shows its age and wear with some loss of the skin, but remains tight.
