Description:

ANTIQUE European Swept-Hilt Rapier

The Civilian’s Sidearm in the 17th Century

Here we present an Antique European Swept-Hilt Rapier. The swept hilt rapier enjoyed a status of being the weapon of choice for self-defense and dueling in the late-16th and throughout the 17th Century. It was a cut & thrust design that was especially suited for thrust due to its long, straight blade. The hilt evolved over time to become more ornate and protective of the wielder’s hand with shell guards, larger quillons, and knucklebows with many branches. Major blade-making centers such as Toledo, Spain and Solingen, Germany exported blades all over continental Europe. This was an era in the history of Europe defined by the Baroque style of art, the growth of modern science, and, of course, exploration and colonization.

This sword features a 37-inch, single-edged, double-fullered blade protruding from a pierced clamshell guard. Behind that is a long double quillon, a knucklebow with several branches forming scrolls as they attach to the one next to it. Grip is braided steel. Pommel is somewhat egg-shaped. This is a great example of just how protected the hand could be.

The overall condition is good. A dark gray patina covers throughout.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
