Description:

BAVARIAN Model 1889 Officers Degen with Royal Lion

Kingdom of Bavaria’s Motto “In Treue Fest”

Here we present an antique Model 1889 Bavarian Officer’s Degen or Sword, made circa 1900. This sword was used across Germany at the end of the 19th and into the 20th Century. The décor would vary depending on which kingdom it represented. This one bears the lion of Bavaria, along with the kingdom’s motto “In Treue Fest”, which means “Steadfast in Loyalty”. The Kingdom of Bavaria succeeded the Electorate of Bavaria (established in 1623) when Elector Maximillian IV Joseph declared himself king in 1805. The Kingdom would end with the end of World War I. This sword would have been in use until that time as well.

The overall condition is good. The 32-inch blade is etched with the Kingdom of Bavaria motto “In Treue Fest” and shows moderate wear. The shield guard features a Bavarian lion decoration. The scabbard is in good condition, showing moderate wear and light pitting, especially near the drag. The throat of the scabbard is not complete.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
