WWI U.S. PROPERTY Marked COLT 1911 Pistol
WWI-era Inspector Marked 1911 Government Model
Here we present a Colt Model of 1911 U.S. Army Pistol, made in 1917 in Hartford, Connecticut. John Moses Browning’s famous pistol was adopted by the U.S. government in 1911 and attained iconic status throughout both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and beyond.
This one was made in the last year of the Great War. It is marked “UNITED STATES PROPERTY” on the left side of the frame. The right side of the slide is marked “M1911A1 U.S. ARMY”. The left side of the slide is marked “PATENTED APR. 20.1897. SEPT.9.1902/ DEC. 19.1905.FEB.14.1911.AUG.19.1913” and “COLT’S PT. F.A.MFG.CO./HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.” The left side of the frame behind the trigger is marked with the inspector monogram “GHS” of Gilbert H. Stewart. “P” proof mark is centered on the top of the slide. Magazine is marked “R” on the top of the floor plate, and “C-R” on the bottom, the markings of a contractor by the name of Risdon. This pistol was rebuilt, likely for service during WWII.
The overall condition is near fine. The blue finish is 80% intact. The markings are clear and legible. The bore is bright. The grips are in great shape. The action on this pistol is excellent.
