Description:

Ornate BARBARY WARS Antique FLINTLOCK Pistol

Used by Mediterranean Pirates Circa 1800

Here we present an antique Mediterranean Flintlock Pistol, made circa 1800 in one of the North African nations along the Barbary Coast. This period in the Mediterranean was characterized by frequent piracy as the rulers of Algiers, Tripoli, and Tunis (modern day Morocco, Libya, Algiers, and Tunisia) carried out a campaign of piracy against ships whose countries had not paid exorbitant tributes. European and American ships alike were repeatedly looted of goods and people. The captured sailors and travelers would then be kept as slaves to be ransomed or sold into further slavery. It was a pistol like this that would have been used by the Muslim boarding parties and used against the American Marines when the United States had enough.

This specimen is full-length and ornate. The barrel bears modest engraving. The stock has been carved and inlaid with wire in unique designs. There is a brass medallion set into the back of the stock. The pommel is dome-shaped with a point at the end. It would have made a good club once the single shot had been expended.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The stock is in good shape with a little chipping and repair forward of the lock. The repair is solid and immobile. The bore is smooth and dusty. The action on this pistol is quite strong. This would suit many different collecting themes, including American Wars, the Marine Corps, and Barbary Pirates.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 11-1/4 inches.
