Description:

2-in-1 BRITISH Antique FLINTLOCK Double w DAGGER

Tap Action Pistol by SMITH of LONDON

Here we present an antique Smith of London Tap Action Flintlock Pistol with a Folding Dagger, made circa the late 18th Century. This would have been a highly desirable companion for daily carry in London with its twin .41 caliber bores and folding dagger. The pistol features modest engraving on the brass frame.

Each bore has its own vent through which a spark would travel to ignite the charge within. With a flip of the horseshoe-shaped rotating lever on the left side of the frame, one could select either the top or bottom bore. If neither barrel had been shot yet, the shooter could open both vents to shoot both bores simultaneously. The barrels thread off for tool-less loading. This also gave the lead ball a better gas seal and more velocity than one having to fit from the muzzle. Muzzles are star shaped, but bores are smooth. The dagger is retained by the trigger guard, which is spring-loaded to fit over the tip of the blade.

The left side of the brass frame is maker marked “SMITH” and the right side is marked “LONDON” The barrels and frame bear British proof marks. The dagger is marked “CROWN/DL”.

The overall condition is very good. The brass frame bears a nice, aged patina. The iron is semi-bright with some peppering. The markings are clear and legible. The engraving is sharp. The walnut grip is in good shape with a few handling marks. The bores smooth and clean. The action is crisp and excellent. Here is a fantastic example of a highly refined British self-defense pistol!
