ANTIQUE Emerson & Silver Light Cavalry M1860 SABER
CIVIL WAR Made in New Jersey
Here we present an Antique Emerson & Silver Light Cavalry Model 1860 Saber, manufactured circa 1864 in Trenton, New Jersey. This saber was used by US Cavalry from the American Civil War until the end of the Indian wars; some were still in use during the Spanish-American War. The M1860 saber received its name to distinguish it from the larger and heavier Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber that it replaced. Like its predecessor it has a brass guard and leather-wrapped grip, but it was smaller and easier to handle.
The left side of the blade is marked “EMERSON/&/SILVER”. The right side is marked “1864”. The guard is marked “G737”, probably a unit or inventory marking.
The overall condition is very good. The blade is 34-3/4 inches in length and has nicks along the edge showing that it was used. The leather and braided wire wrapped grip is in good shape. The hilt shows “battle damage” style dents and bends. The scabbard is in very good condition and is covered in a smooth, dark patina.
